Transforming Institutions: Culture, The Missing Link to Climate Action

februari 17 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

The Jan van Eyck Academie welcomes Alison Tickell, founder of Julie’s Bicycle (UK) for a keynote on the vital role that arts and culture play in climate transformation. In conversation with Jan van Eyck director Hicham Khalidi, Tickell will discuss how linking environmental to cultural policy can call cultural and artistic communities to climate action.

Julie’s Bicycle (JB) is a pioneering non-profit organiziation mobilizing the arts and culture to take action on the climate and ecological crisis. Since 2007, JB has established an extensive methodology for environmental change through culture, bringing together environmental and cultural expertise with a comprehensive resource library, set of tools and benchmarks based on evidence-based research. JB has recently issued a Call to Action for governments, in parallel to COP26, in order to start accounting for the ways in which their cultural and artistic communities can contribute to limiting climate change; not only by operating sustainably, but also through the sector’s creativity and power to motivate.

Culture: The Missing Link to Climate Action, is part of Transforming Institutions, a new series of lectures and conversations. By identifying the current environmental crisis as a systemic crisis and acknowledging the unique significance of culture in this context, the series explores the obstacles and possibilities of cultural institutions becoming both responsive and resilient towards the climate emergency and its interlinked socio-cultural crisis.
